Modern Geometries 5th Ed.

Modern Geometries 5th Ed. by James Smart (1998) is the book I use when I teach Math 310 at Western Illinois University. It is available at the Internet Archive, by following this link.

Decomposing and Composing Appear 26 times in the CCSSM

Paula Beardell Krieg, a teacher, is always doing cool, creative art and math activities with her students. When she used ‘composing shapes from parts’ (in her tweet) it motivated me to search the CCSSM. A common theme in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) is decomposing and composing numbers and geometric shapes.  I …

Geometry Reference Sheets (and online textbooks)

Often in the back of a Geometry textbook there is a list of Postulates and Theorems. These lists can be useful for review and reference.  Here are some useful reference sheets I found on the web. My Top Two are pages 59-64 of the “Contents of Student Resources” and the 6-page Mathematics Reference Sheet from …

Area Formulas – Why?

Here’s a nice video showing why the area formulas are what they are: https://twitter.com/i/status/1319026089575014401 Here is the GeoGebra file: https://www.geogebra.org/m/jkszrqfa

*Euclidean* Geometry

This page is designed to provide links and information for understanding Euclidean Geometry in its original form. Euclid’s Elements site from Clark University* – Introduction, TOC, Book 1, Quick Trip. This is a good, comprehensive treatment of http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/java/elements/bookI/cn.html Nice things include ⦿there is Guide (explanation) of the definitions, propositions, etc., ⦿proof of the propositions, ⦿the …

Bogus Fibonacci Triangles

Disclaimer: I apologize for the low quality of this page and diagram. I believe it to be mathematically correct. Someday someone can make it look nicer. This diagram (OK a better, neater one could be made) shows two would-be triangles. One with an area (if you add up the parts) of 136. The other with …

Geometry is inherently important

Geometry is an important part of mathematics.  Geometry is an important part of human thought. Geometry should not be reduced or removed from the HS curriculum or the General Education curriculum. This needs to be developed into a full page.  Here are a few starter links to draw from: https://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/geometry/across.html https://www.universalclass.com/articles/math/geometry/why-is-geometry-important.htm https://www.mum.edu/mathematics/faculty-profiles/catherine-gorini/symmetry-a-link-between-mathematics-and-life/
